Welcome

Welcome to the area

American’s Industrial Revolution began in Lowell, Massachusetts. Miles of canals through the city harnessed the energy of the Merrimack River to power numerous five-to-six-story-high textile mills that were considered massive in the day. Today, of course, much has changed in Lowell. The deindustrialization of the American economy has continued unabated for decades. The city has done an incredible job of preserving the mill buildings, canals, cobblestone streets, and historic architecture. The U.S. National Park Service operates a national park in Lowell that tells the story of the American industrial revolution. Meticulously preserved historical artifacts give park visitors a sense of what life was like during those earlier times.

Another aspect of Lowell that has not changed is the spirit of its people. The city was founded by hopeful, optimistic, hearty, entrepreneurial souls. These industrial pioneers created systems that forever changed the world in which we live. Working together to spark economic development through the construction of two new arenas adjacent to downtown, public and private leaders have financed new downtown businesses.” Downtown Lowell is once again a thriving retail, cultural, and residential hub. Historic mills have been restored into luxury condominiums, attracting buyers from all over the country. Downtown Lowell is home to numerous festivals, including the Lowell Folk Festival, City of Lights Parade, and WinterFest. The artist district is the center of cultural activities for the downtown. Sports, theatre, and cultural activities are just a few of the reasons why Downtown Lowell is a great place to live and work.

Multi-ethnic Diversity
Our region’s early immigrant populations set the stage for a continuing flow of ethnic diversity we still enjoy today. The annual Lowell Folk Festival is a celebration of these multi-ethnic cultures, their food, dance, and customs. Each year, thousands of people lined the banks of the Merrimack to enjoy the annual South East Asian Water Festival.

Learning, Research, & Job Opportunities
The region is also an important center of learning and research.  The University of Massachusetts at Lowell, Middlesex Community College, and Newbury College, provide a multitude of academic opportunities and as home to many high-tech industries and manufacturers, the area offers a wide range of job possibilities.
