Leisure & the Arts

For a small city, Portland has a lot to offer in the way of great entertainment, art and related activities. With three professional sports teams, many beautiful galleries and museums, historical landmarks and the performing arts, one could be entertained all year-round without driving more than a few miles. And that does not include the year-round outdoor activities like skiing, boating, sailing, golfing and anything else that gets you out to enjoy the outdoors.
If you want to watch athletic activity instead, Portland offers spectator sports for all seasons. In the spring and summer, Hadlock Field is home to the Portland Sea Dogs, a Double A baseball team, and in the fall and winter, watch the American Hockey League’s Portland Pirates at Cumberland County Civic Center. In 2009, a NBA Development Team will bring professional basketball to Portland.
Performing arts options include the Portland Symphony Orchestra at the beautiful Merrill Auditorium located in Portland City Hall, Portland Stage Company and other theater companies.

Greater Portland offers many venues to view art. Take a stroll through the Old Port and the Arts District to view the diverse work shown at the city's many private art galleries. The Portland Museum of Art houses works by Andrew Wyeth, Winslow Homer, Picasso and Monet in its permanent collection, and is host to several traveling and special shows throughout the year. Next door, for the kids, there is the Children’s Museum of Maine, which offers a wide range of daily events, as well as, permanent hands-on exhibits.
Greater Portland has enough shopping options for the most discriminating buyer. Take a walk in the Old Port to visit specialty shops or go to the Farmer’s Market to get some fresh Maine foods. The Maine Mall in South Portland has more than 130 stores. A short drive north brings you to the Freeport outlets; forty miles south are the outlets in Kittery. Portland has diverse dining options, so stop by for a bite at a local restaurant.
There is always something going on in greater Portland. For up-to-date listings, pick up one of the free entertainment newspapers on the street, buy a copy of the daily newspaper or simply stop by the Chamber office at 60 Pearl Street for ideas.
