Geography and Climate

Downtown Stamford – the business center – is on the Connecticut coastal plain, while residential areas to the north rise into the forested foothills. The climate is temperate, moderated by coastal winds. Average temperature in the summer ranges from the mid-70s to the mid-80s; in winter, from the mid-20s to the mid-50s. Average snowfall is 26 inches; average rainfall 44 inches.

Stamford residents take advantage of the yearly change of seasons. In summer, they flock to the city’s beaches, boating on the Sound, and outdoor activities. The richly-colored autumn leaves draw them to the many public parks for walking and hiking. Winter brings the opening of ski resorts just over an hour away. With spring, they enjoy the blossoming flowers and trees and the programs at the Bartlett Arboretum and the Stamford Nature Center.
