Location is crucial to the success of emerging technology and biomedical companies. The Worcester region offers ready access to both the intellectual capital and material resources required for companies to thrive. Our vast transportation network provides efficient access to customers, suppliers, and employees while the cost of doing business in the Worcester region makes us competitive with other metropolitan areas.

The Worcester region is a natural choice for biotechnology and biomedical companies to locate and to prosper. It is an ideal setting for startups and, with its vast network of resources including a multi-million dollar fiber optic network, is often a catalyst for success. The region is home to a myriad of successful companies across all industry sectors, including biotechnology, fiber optics, pharmaceuticals, and health care.

The biomedical industry is thriving in Central Massachusetts. Leading the way is the Massachusetts Biomedical Initiatives (MBI) – an independent corporation whose mission is to support the growth of biotechnology and medical device companies in the region. MBI is successfully elevating the status of Massachusetts to that of a world leader in the medical device industry. In 1999, Massachusetts was the second leading state in biotechnology and medical device industries. Today, it is number one for encouraging biomedical companies to achieve their potential.

Gateway Park
The ambitious Gateway Park project is a 55-acre redevelopment of brownfields land at the north end of downtown Worcester. The project is a joint partnership between WBDC and WPI that will result in a new state-of-the-art 124,000 sq. ft. building. The building will be occupied by WPI's Bioengineering Institute and other related graduate research programs along with other related organizations. A parking facility and 3 additional pad ready sites will also be developed to support buildings with square footage of 80,000, 100,000, and 160,000 on three different pads. An additional parcel is available for housing and retail space to create an area that sustains a bustling commercial and residential district.
